Never could his voice be heard over the deserts, the sea or the vast outstretched land that was their honeymoon getaway. If only he was here, he could see how devastated she was. How she was barely clinging on to sanity without him. She clutched her stomach as the memory of that fateful came rushing back to her mind. Like a movie on the loop.
They were both in Mike’s car driving late at night. Mike had one hand on Lucy’s bare thigh and he kept the other one on the steering wheel. His eyes averted from the road time and again. Claire playfully slapped away his hand, enjoying the company and the jokes they exchanged back and forth but little did she know that their life as a newly wed couple would be shortlived.
Every once in a while, Mike would turn his head and gaze at Lucy in the most affectionate manner. Lucy would ignore his gaze and would stay fixed on the road. She could feel the burning of his gaze onto her bare skin. He couldn’t wait to get to their honeymoon lodge and ravish her beautiful body all night.
“Mike, be serious. Please keep your eyes on the road?” She said
The next few seconds went about in a flash but the minutes of her suffering felt like an eternity. For Claire did not experience any pain but the ringing voice continued long after he closed his eyes. The road was clear at this particular hour of the night. Out of the blue, Claire caught sight of oncoming bright headlights, heading towards them. Their car was in the wrong lane. Mike that moment was showing Claire how he could drive the car without putting his hands on the steering wheel.
“Mike!!!!!” She tried to grab the steering wheel.
But she was too late.
Car horns blared. Brakes squealed. Glass shattered. Metal crunched. Then silence.
A shiver went down her spine as she snapped back to reality, only to find Mike’s beloved dog whimpering and licking at her feet. Claire wasn’t the only one who was missing Mike. She stared into nothingness. Her mind flashed back to those countless nights with his family in the waiting room. The groans, moans, wailing, prayers mumbled and frequent tears were shed.
How many years would it take for the star-crossed lovers to reunite once again?
She absent-mindedly glared at the birds, chirping, on her windows. How she wished that these winged beauties could take her message to paradise. She felt so vulnerable yet so angry at how selfish Mike was.
She did not have the courage to end her life as she was weak. Weak enough that she felt hollow and empty. She poured out her feelings and thoughts in a book. A book with “I love you” written over and over. Could she ever learn to forgive him?
